When we think about sustainability, we often focus on the state of the environment or long-term economic viability. While both of these things are essential, the solid foundation of a sustainable future (imagine a three-legged stool) requires a social element as well. To achieve social equity, this generation’s youth will need to perceive of themselves as actors in the civic theatre, believe themselves empowered as empathic participants. What steps might we take to develop a new model of education that truly inspires our youth to lead?

Young people are anxious to make sense of the world and to envision what their role might be in it. Fiction, the power of story, is an important tool for doing that. Teaching kids to write fiction is an essential investment in the health and livability of our communities and in the promise of the next generation.
